Building Envelope
Drone imagery has been explored as a way to provide additional views of building exteriors. For a property owner, the important questions are whether a flight is permitted and what information the professional responsible for the inspection needs.
NYC has a permit process for drone takeoffs and landings
The earlier version of this article described restrictions before NYC introduced its public permit process in July 2023. The NYPD’s current unmanned-aircraft guidance explains the application process, exceptions, and circumstances that may require additional permissions. A property owner’s approval alone is not a substitute for the applicable flight permissions.
Keep required inspections with the qualified professional
NYC’s façade filing requirements explain the role of a Qualified Exterior Wall Inspector in the Façade Inspection and Safety Program. Do not assume that aerial photographs replace the required examination or report. The professional responsible for the building should determine the inspection approach.
Turn findings into a repair plan
Our Hofstra Gittleson Hall project included exterior upgrades, windows, and waterproofing while classes continued. It is an example of our building work, not evidence of drone use.
